Local hero José Navas never leave fans indifferent, no matter what form his work takes. While his Compagnie Flak upcoming double-bill features a new group creation, the Venezuelan-born dancer-choreographer will grace the stage only in a new solo, Villanelle. Mindful that though he has composed a series of contemporary dance group works in succession over a number of years, he's resolutely remained a soloist. "I put myself in different shoes, but my interest for solo work was always there."..

Mozart was renowned for it, and so were such great pianist-composers of the 19th and early 20th centuries as Chopin, Liszt and Isaac Albeniz.
Even legendary piano showmen of the first half of the 20th century, such as Leopold Godowsky, Vladimir Horowitz and Arthur Rubinstein, made it part of their performance practice early in their careers.
And then - virtually nothing. Improvisation in classical music all but vanished from the world concert stage.
Why?
"I wish I knew," says Venezuelan-born pianist Gabriela Montero, who has almost single-handedly resurrected the seemingly rarefied art of conjuring music of substance on the spot, either from themes spontaneously given to her by concertgoers, or from musical ideas of her own...
Born in Texas but raised in his mother's native Venezuela, Devendra Banhart has built an enviable career out of being an outsider. The 28-year-old singer-songwriter broke out in 2002 with a lo-fi album made up of largely folky ditties he left on people's answering machines, quickly amassing a passionate following. On his sixth album What Will We Be (Warner Bros.), he once again blends Latin Grooves with mellow California vibes -- just don't call it freak folk. "That's the most embarrassing term in the world," says Banhart, by phone from his L.A. home. "it's humiliating." SPIN reached the talkative Banhart as he took a break from designing ironic T-shirts....

...Venezuelan artist Patricia Cazorla creates “diaries” or personal collections of portraits of women who have a significance to her, whether because of their bold characters or because of their simple beauty. Cazorla depicts the emotions, sensibilities, and personalities of her subjects through vivid colors, strong brush strokes, and collages of images taken from the media, although her favorite media is oil paint. “I am Venezuelan,” Cazorla says, “but my blood is actually ‘mixed media.’” She has experimented with video, drawing, silk-screening, lithography, and collage in order to achieve a clear interpretation of her feelings and life experiences. She has been influenced by Spanish artists from the 19th century such as Joaquin Sorolla, as well as the American painter Romaine Brooks. Contemporary artists Elizabeth Payton, Marlene Dumas, and Kehinde Wiley have also influenced Carloza’s art...
At a party in an upscale mall, wealthy women and young girls in cocktail dresses cluster around the chicest of them all: Carolina Herrera.
Herrera, dressed in one of her signature white shirts and full skirts with matching heels, poses for photographs like a pro for hours. She smiles and chats and does interviews with the media.
"Darling, I have been doing this for 28 years, so I suppose that if they don't know by now, after 28 years, then I have been doing something wrong," she said. "If they don't know about me, maybe I shouldn't be here"...
